This book was my first experience with Afro-futurism and I have to say, I really enjoyed such a unique and interesting perspective. The blend of culture and space travel, it felt fresh. It felt like something I've never seen explored, and the richness of the main character, for such a short book, really had me considering dynamics in culture that didn't feel overwrought. I like when stories feel threaded, and the healing power of the otjize, what her edan could do, on and on.

And even just the importance of otjize on her skin, and all of the different levels of connectivity with who she was before leaving the planet, and off planet, and the interconnection with the Meduse that all had their own interesting agendas and miscommunications right from the start.

When I got to the end, I couldn't wait to start book two. So, that's saying something.
