A friend recommended this book, so I started it. When I realized it was a re-imagining of Fall of House of User, which I did a paper on in college, I went to go see who the author was. That’s when I discovered it was none other than Ursula Vernon, the wife of an acquaintance I’d been at the same get togethers with! I had no idea she’d started writing adult books, and wow, her writing is fantastic.
I’d also reached out to her in the past for some writing advice which turned out to be very useful. Strange how small the world is.
But back to the story, as I said, the original I was familiar with. But this version, I really wasn’t expecting to find something that I thoroughly enjoyed at such a deeper level. The integration of this mechanisms in this story just really work. I never thought mycology was going to keep me sitting in the car listening when I was supposed to be doing something. The lore was well thought out, and the main character such an interesting character. This was the perfect book for halloween and I moved quickly to the sequels because I had to see where the sworn soldier went next!
