This is probably the oddest book I have read in some time. It is a mixture of people with telepathic capabilities and those that can stop them along with the concept of living after you die in this world inside your brain if they can get to you in time. I’ll commend Dick with originality here, as it was definitely interesting. Some concepts were so fun like the prediction of microtransactions for everything including just going in and out of your apartment.
If I were to be critical of this book, it would be in the over the top dialog of the characters. They were unique, but very stereotypical in there archetypes that it made you feel like you wanted more. The other thing, the concept of UBIK itself was a very odd plot device. Even trying to sum up the story is kinda hard because the strength of Jory overpowering and eating the people in this half world and how Ella fought back, it’s wild. Joe Chip I sort of felt we were following in his world and everyone else was just a part of his world, but the mechanics of how this half life worked wasn’t fully clear.
I have to still give it to Dick that pushing Sci-Fi fun is definitely where this book excels.
