Book Review: The War of Art

10/19/2025

This book had been suggested for a long time.  It’s feels like a collection of blog posts, but that does not mean there isn’t value here.  I like the concept of “resistance” being so many different things that are trying to prevent you from creating your art.  I like the author talking about his experience with all these things.  I like the concept of failure as success, and I think there is a lot here for people to latch onto on working through the hard bits (showing up) and getting what they want to get done, whether for hobby, or professional.

The only part the book started to lose me was the introduction of religion in regards to the place art comes from.  Not to say the author is wrong, if he believes that for him, nothing wrong with that.  But for me, it felt like it took away too much from the artist, from their unique perspective on the world, that they need to get out of themselves into a form of expression, not from some mythical muse.  But, no matter where your inspiration comes from, there is so much about “resistance” to fight against all the forces working against you.
