Book Review: Something Wicked This Way Comes

11/06/2025

So this is only the second book by Ray Bradbury I have red (the first being Fahrenheit 451) and this book absolutely delivers.  The writing is so poetic, so filled with beautiful phrasing, that you smile as you are reading it, even when the scene is quite dark.

I might not be a huge fan of switching perspectives so often, like done in this book, in a scene, I didn’t let it ruin my enjoyment.  The characters are interesting, and the perspective mostly of the two boys, Will and Jim, and how they differ, really allows for much more depth.  I was quite young when the movie came out, and I remember it being quite scary, so I might have to revisit to see how well it tracks with the story.

If you like carnival based horror does in literary style, this is a book for you to read.  I don’t often put quotes from books in here, but this one is required.  “God, how we get our fingers in each other's clay. That's friendship, each playing the potter to see what shapes we can make of each other.”
