Book Review: Last Chance To See...

04/07/2025

I don’t remember how long ago I started this book, but it has definitely sat on my end-table for a few years.  Part of me did not want to finish this book as this was the last of Douglas Adam’s catalogue for me to finish.  The book was replete with his special breed of humor.  I found myself laughing all over the place, wishing I could have hung out with him just once.  HHGTTG was my favorite book as a child, and it cemented by love for the absurdity of science fiction.  It’s where my humor starts.  I was sad to read that two of the species in the book are functionally extinct now, the white rhino and the yantzee dolphin.  I think the most interesting thing about the writing was not just the talk of seeing the species, but the journey to get to each of the species he went and saw.  This was no small feat.  I am sad he didn’t mention how many cologne he ended the journey with, if any.

Unlike most books I read, this was solely for that author.  It won’t influence my writing as much as it influenced my heart for the love of everything on this planet that isn’t us.  It was interesting for me because as I finished out the last few pages, I considered that we aren’t mostly harmless in the world of fragile species.
