Coming off of Network Effect this book really surprised me in that it really could have been an email. I don’t say that lightly as the other books before this have been great. There is nothing inherently wrong with the writing, but it’s a murder mystery that does nothing for the overall story of murderbot and for me, that was disappointing. It didn’t even feel like a bridge novel. It was like villain of the week and the whole time I was reading it, I was hoping for some tie in to the bigger world. It’s also possible that the story felt stale because we were going through the same behaviors of murderbot in a different situation, and again, it just felt like a bunch of story to fill a hole.
