This is a series I have been reading for a long time, and I am getting close to the first end, before Alanson decided to add some more titles at his wife’s urging. Trying to cover thirteen books up to this point would be a lot, so I will focus on a few overarching themes and this book in particular. I really like the dynamic of Skippy and Joe, although by this many books, the jokes are getting old. I say that because this series needs an editor. There is always a lot of repeated beats in the stories where we are presenting the same information multiple times and it hasn’t been that long.
What I enjoyed about this story is all the tension in all the lies Joe has been making and how we are at the point of not being sure how much longer they can continue to fool the two senior species of their capabilities. The story doesn’t go much into the elders which I am patiently waiting to find out more about. All in all, it is a fantastic series for that more serial story approach. I think the other thing that really makes these stories work in RC Bray’s reading of them.
This is the first long series I have read, so maybe when the books start to feel like they drag a bit is common? Thirteen books is quite a lot, and I still have a few more to go. I’ve heard the payoff is worth it, so I will continue on.
