This book was a recommendation from a friend on s good example of how an author can really describe settings well. I concur, Barnes did a great job of setting up the ghost ship. I enjoyed this book, the mix of sci-fi and horror, as the ghosts the main character dealt with really worked well for me. The interesting thing is the book had a lot of parallels to how Aliens plays out. It starts with an investigation with a company that wants to know why you let your crew die. Involves investigating a beacon (okay, to be fair, that was Alien) and then they ask you to go back. Then of course, the company guy willing to sacrifice you for the bottom line. That of course is where the similarities end. If I were to actually give it one critique, it would be how often the main character complains about herself. It’s not that the feelings aren’t valid, it’s that they come up so often, that it feels like an overly repeated beat. It made her a bit one dimensional for me in her character arc. This also is likely me getting burnt out on first-person stories which all seem to go so heavy into the emotional turmoil of the character. The danger of having to filter everything through your main character. But, as I said, the book was satisfying.
